Antarctic Ice Marathon - Running On The Edge

On 22 November 2014 our amazing Lyn La Canna took part in the Antarctic Ice Marathon!

The Antarctic Ice Marathon is the only marathon run in the interior of the Antarctic and the Ice Marathon course comprised of a 21.1km loop, which was repeated twice.

The Antarctic Ice Marathon took place at 80 degrees south, just a few hundred miles from the South Pole at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains.

Just to give you an idea of the challenge that Lyn faced, the underfoot conditions comprised of snow and ice throughout and an average wind chill temperature of -20C with strong Katabatic winds to contend with. Furthermore, the event took place at an altitude of 700 metres.

With an absolutely incredible result Lyn finished the course in 2nd place for the women's results with a time of 6:44:04 hrs.

Congratulations Lyn, we know that this was a dream for you and we are all extremely proud and truly inspired by you!

Here are some great photos, courtesy of UVU Antarctic Ice Marathon, of the remarkable event.

Lyn has run the Melbourne Marathon twice, the London Marathon and the New York Marathon, with her sights set on running a marathon on each continent.

Lyn took up running in 2007 when she participated in a fundraiser event after a friend's three-year-old daughter had a heart attack and was in an induced coma for ten days in Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.

Lyn, we look forward to your next marathon from another continent!
